Who is the IFA?

Greg Shaw, IFA Director of International And Corporate Relations, Explains in This Video

About Us

WE ARE an international non-governmental organization with a membership base of NGOs, the corporate sector, academia, government, and individuals.

WE BELIEVE in 'generating positive change for older people throughout the world by stimulating, collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information on rights, policies, and practices that improve the quality of life of people as they age.'

To inform, educate and promote policies and practice to improve the quality of life of older persons around the world.

Our responsibilities include:

  • Building, facilitating and strengthening bridges between government, non-government and the corporate sectors concerned with ageing issues
  • Strengthening non-government organizations through collaboration toward a common goal
  • Improving the understanding of ageing polices and practice and their impact on the lives of older people

Through our work, the IFA works to influence and promote positive change for older people globally.

Achievements

The IFA has consistently campaigned for the rights of older people in a diversity of ways, including involvement in drafting key initiatives, participating in and hosting global conferences, and producing our own reports and publications. Below is a short list of some of the IFA's key initiatives.

Key Initiatives:

  • The Declaration of the Rights and Responsibilities of Older Persons was first published in 1990 and thereafter adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1991 as the United Nations Principles for Older People
  • In Montreal in 1999, the IFA's Fourth Global Conference brought together Ministers responsible for ageing issues from 61 countries. This successful meeting resulted in the production of The Montreal Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Older People
  • The IFA hosts bi-annual global conferences of leaders and experts in the field of ageing, including government ministers and decision makers, the corporate community and representatives of NGOs working in the field. Visit www.ifa2010.org for information on the next global conference to be held in Melbourne in 2010.
  • The IFA contributed to a Global Survey on the effectiveness of the United Nations Principles for Older People
  • The IFA publishes regular communiqués through the IFA Journal - Global Ageing, and through our monthly newsletter IFA-eNews

Our Priorities are to establish the IFA as a point of…

Connection – linking together NGOs, academia, policy makers, and the private sector.

Information sharing and exchange – facilitating knowledge exchange through our networks

Research and advocacy – collaborating in research and providing a repository of information

Policy knowledge – around areas with global implications: age discrimination, engaging seniors, financial protection, and age-friendly communities

It is our mission to:

  • Respond to the need for information on policies, practices, and rights
  • Facilitate interaction and collaboration between all sectors concerned with ageing issues
  • Providing a reliable platform for information exchange, empowerment and connection
  • Bridge gaps in the knowledge and understanding of the ageing experience
  • Develop tools to empower older people and the various groups working with them
  • Help foster an age friendly environment at the global, regional and local levels

History of the IFA

The IFA began operations in 1973, at a time when trends toward population ageing were beginning to be understood by organizations around the world. AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) was instrumental in helping found the IFA, and the two organizations have enjoyed a strong relationship ever since. To honour the IFA's 35th anniversary in 2008, AARP compiled a history of the early years of the IFA.

A welcome from the President of the AARP
