In 2009, the Danish Government purchased 1000 Paro robots for use in care institutions. What is Paro?Paro’s lifelike and cuddly exterior masks a highly sophisticated interactive robot. Paro is sensitive to light, sound, touch, posture and temperature. Its sensors can detect the presence of humans and cause Paro to interact with them. Paro has enough artificial intelligence to learn which of its range of its seal-like behaviors are most stimulating to humans, and adjust that behavior accordingly. Why Paro? The theraputic benefits of animals are well documented. But hospitals and long-term care facilities often lack the facilities to properly care for live animals. Since 2003, Paro has been used and evaluated as a live animal substitute in both Japanese and European institutions. Paro has proved itself to be a valuable theraputic tool, stimulating interaction between patients and caregivers, improving socialization, motivation and mood. How Can I Introduce Paro to my Patients/Residents?Canadian care professionals who are interested in a hands-on evaluation of Paro’s theraputic potential are invited to contact Greg Shaw at the International Federation on Aging ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Care professionals from other regions are also welcome to contact Greg, who may be able to assist them make similar arrangements from a location closer to their practice. |
