For the first time in human history, the 21st century will see a majority of the global population living in urban environments. At the same time, many countries around the world are experiencing population ageing on unprecedented levels. Responding to the opportunities and challenges presented at the intersection of these remarkable demographic trends - the cities, towns and urban environments of the world - will be among the most defining social, political, economic and environmental issues of our time. All levels of society, from public officials to the business community to service providers will play a role in building communities that are safe, sustainable, and equitable where people of all ages can grow and enjoy a positive quality of life.
Responding to the need of information on this situation, the IFA has established an online resource for information on the range of major projects from around the world that respond to the third Priority Direction of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA): Ensuring Enabling and Supportive Environments.
Agefriendlycommunities.org is a resource for information on good practices and community development tools of interest to a broad audience from policy makers to urban planners to designers, architects, academics and other interested individuals and organizations. The IFA will continue to expand and enhance agefriendlycities.org to incorporate the latest age-friendly developments around the world. We are committed to providing and developing a website that is highly functional, content-rich and user-friendly in order to give voice to lessons learned, promote best practice and support this important global movement.
